Angolan civil-society activists have been handed heavy prison sentences in a show trial condemned as ‘a travesty of justice’ by Amnesty International and many other human rights organizations.
Fifteen youth activists were arrested and hauled into court last year on charges of ‘rebellion’ for organizing a book reading of Gene Sharp’s essay on nonviolent resistance From Dictatorship to Democracy (see Agenda NI 490).
