In February 2019, the charismatic young Bukele swept to first place in El Salvador’s presidential election, pushing aside the candidate from his former party, the governing leftwing FMLN, and gaining 53 per cent of the vote.
Bukele ran a savvy social media-based campaign playing on the themes of gang violence and corruption to lure voters from both the radical FMLN and the rightwing Arena Party, which had between them dominated political life in the country for decades.
