Earlier this year a new submarine data-cable touched down in Valparaiso, Chile.
The cable – which is the country’s largest single data pipe – stretches 10,000 kilometres from California and, unusually, it’s owned by a single company: Google. It’s not their only cable project: next year the US company will complete a transatlantic data link able to carry 250 terabits of information per second.
