Laura Poitras is a biographer, and her latest documentary is about photographer Nan Goldin, whose work is largely autobiographical. But this is not a precious or self-referential enterprise – both are deeply political beings.
In her earlier docs – about a doctor in US-occupied Iraq, Osama bin Laden’s driver, and whistle-blowers Edward Snowden and Julian Assange – Poitras reveals the political in the personal. She gained the US Department of Homeland Security’s highest ‘threat rating’.
