It is a sweltering autumn here in London. The tube trains are packed tightly with sweaty commuters all staring intently at their mobile phones, trying not to make eye contact with one another. It’s my stop. I work my way along the carriage and someone treads on my foot, so I apologize. I reach the exit doors just before they close, thereby trapping me in until the next station. I’m going to be late for my meeting with filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, director of 18 award-winning films including The Bandit Queen, Elizabeth, Mr India and most recently, What’s Love Got To Do With It?
I limp to Kapur’s London address, arriving at 12 minutes past the hour, sweat-soaked and somewhat dishevelled. This is not the impression I was hoping to create.
