‘The master’s tools,’ Audre Lorde said, ‘will never dismantle the master’s house.’ But what if the master’s tools are all you have for now? How can they be subverted or repurposed for liberation?
These are questions pervading the work of UK-based Singaporean artist Jack Ky Tan. Combining sculpture with activism and curation, Tan aims to undo or remould art institutions which are often steeped in the legacies of colonialism.
