This is a bleakly-set and exhilarating one-off – a gritty realist Welsh-language drama, based, via a one-woman play, on Greek myth. In the original, Artemis, the goddess of childbirth, demands the sacrifice of princess Iphigenia during the Trojan War. Here Iphigenia becomes Effi, a native of post-industrial, austerity-gutted Blaenau Ffestiniog. Effi’s fate, by contrast, depends not on divine whim but on political deliberation and a pervasive class war whose dynamics she has no idea of.
Effi, 20-ish, lives with a friend in a run-down cul-de-sac under a glowering mountain, and loves getting sloshed. She has no job or aspiration, and she survives on benefits, with handouts from her gran, who has brought her up and who works in a chip shop.
