La Playita del Guasmo (Guasmo beach) is a popular haunt for those who live in the poorer areas Guayaquil, Ecuador. Although previously abandoned by several local governments, in 2000 the beach was included in a municipal regeneration project. Five years later it was inaugurated and opened to the public.
However, the beach is still affected by heavy pollution because of the industrial waste that has been dumped in the water since the 1960s. Now the local government has promised to clean the area and the water of pollution, although so far the promises have been put into practice very slowly.
