Songs for Kommeno

When, in 2008, German jazz drummer Günter ‘Baby’ Sommer arrived in Kommeno in western Greece to participate in a music festival, the mayor asked him what he knew about the village’s history. Nothing, said Sommer. His attention was directed to a memorial in the square listing the 317 villagers massacred by the German army in 1943. Songs for Kommeno is a response to what Sommer calls a ‘German-Greek tragedy’.
