Green Vancouver has become the first city in Canada to embrace ‘Meatless Mondays’. It follows in the footsteps of cities around the world such as Los Angeles, San Francisco and Ghent in Belgium, where the idea originated. By encouraging people to consume less meat, city officials hope to protect the planet and promote good health among citizens.
Ceramic pot filtration, a technology developed in 1981 by Guatemalan scientist Fernando Mazariegos, is bringing clean water to the masses. Social enterprise Ecofiltro began work in 2009 to supply affordable, clean water to Guatemala’s poor, a million of whom lack access to safe drinking water. With urban filter sales used to subsidize filter costs in rural areas, Ecofiltro plans to solve Guatemala’s drinking water crisis within the next 10 years.
