Academics have heralded the ‘feminization of agriculture’ as the key to feeding Africa – but empowering women farmers, and convincing the men to cede control, is not easy.
Women produce over 80 per cent of the food in Africa, yet often have no control over the sale of their crops. Family farms are seldom held in the woman’s name, and they have limited access to credit, fertilizer and seeds.
