Thousands of furious locals, determined to save their land and sea from a new nuclear reactor, have succeeded in stalling the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP).
Following a 1998 agreement with the Soviet Union, construction on the site, in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, began in 2001. After a decade of postponements following the collapse of the USSR, the Indo-Russian venture is now nearing completion.
