With a rhythmical heart that comes out of Gambia and Senegal, the British-based Fofoulah (on Glitterbeat) by the band of the same name is a volcanic début of north African rhythm, heavy dub and googly electronics. With Juldeh Camara, rapper Ghostpoet and Algerian/French singer Iness Mezel taking guest slots, this is a vibrant affair. Lándini is another gem of Garifuna music from Aurelio Martinez (on Real World). Gentle and melodic, it’s Latin music with a sweet twist.
Mike Leigh’s very enjoyable Mr Turner debunks the precious and pretentious and puts the venerated English landscape painter into his social context. Timothy Spall is the rough and ready, piss-taking, belching and spitting, but wholly dedicated artist, very much of his time, and fascinated by technological change. Great character turns from a fine cast.
