In Malawi fear of reprisals silences journalists over press freedom.
Nearly 20 years after democracy first dawned in Malawi, journalists are starting to hold off criticizing the government for fear of reprisals.
President Bingu wa Mutharika signed a repressive bill into law last August. Under Section 46 of the Penal Code, the minister of information can unilaterally outlaw any publication considered to be putting out articles that are ‘not in the public interest’.
