Nadezhda Aleksandrovna Lokhvitskaya, known as Teffi, was one of Russia’s foremost writers and satirists in the early 20th century. Though born into a well-heeled St Petersburg family, she had revolutionary sympathies and her political writings were at times critical of the Tsarist government. Yet she was vehemently anti-Bolshevik and thus found herself on the wrong side of the line following the 1917 revolution.
