Mauritian activists have for 45 years been calling for the closure of Diego Garcia and the right of return for Chagossians, Lindsey Collen reports.
Many people know about the forcible removal of Chagossians from their islands. Many know about the US military base on Diego Garcia. But few remember that the Chagos archipelago was detached from the Indian-Ocean territory of Mauritius by the Queen’s Orders-in-Council.
Now Prime Minister Aneerood Jugnauth has filed a resolution before the UN General Assembly for Britain to be brought before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for illegal dismemberment of a country prior to independence.
