There is an expression sometimes muttered from the Yucatán to Juárez: ‘Poor Mexico, so far from God and so close to the United States.’ But Mexicans are hoping that their new President-elect, the 64-year-old leftist Andrés Manuel López Obrador, will have the backbone to stand up for Mexico’s poor and against gringo bullying.
AMLO, as he is best known, has crisscrossed the country for 13 years building a potent political movement – the National Regeneration Movement – to back his bid. The former mayor of Mexico City’s first two attempts at the presidency fell just short, but this time voters, tired of corruption, violence and inequality, gave him a landslide majority with 53 per cent of the vote.
