The future of Ugandan orphans is unclear as the government announces it may close down hundreds of illegal orphanages, some accused of trafficking children. In a dusty compound in Jinja, a town near the source of the Nile, Amani Baby Cottage’s resident director Bryan Chaffin is keen to make it clear his organization is not trafficking children.
‘Everything we do here is legal,’ Chaffin says, though he does perk up when I mention my mother is interested in fostering. ‘Would she consider a Ugandan child?’ he half-jokes.
