After months of bloody offensives against protesters, Nicaragua’s President Daniel Ortega took to the stage recently to celebrate 39 years since the leftwing revolution that brought him to power.
He told the supporters of his Sandinista party that the three months of unrest – in what used to be one of Latin America’s safest countries – was part of a conspiracy financed by internal and external forces, including the US.
