For just one cent, a new wave of African citizen reporters equipped with mobile technologies can broadcast breaking news.

But citizen journalism, while on the rise, is often dismissed as poor quality and unverifiable. An organization called Radar, co-founded by New Internationalist contributor Libby Powell, is working to change this. The NGO trains citizen reporters to send accurate news via SMS; Radar then collates these reports, which are posted to Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook, and channelled to the mainstream media.
