The Egyptian parliament has laid the ground for a new dictatorship after passing a proposal that would allow President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to remain in power until 2034.
Over 80 per cent of Egypt’s 596 MPs voted in favour of the constitutional amendments, which extend presidential terms from four to six years, and granted Sisi a personal exception to run for two more terms. The changes also exempt ‘exceptional legislation’ from judicial review, giving the President power to appoint judicial personnel and annulling the judiciary’s financial independence.
