After decades of campaigning, anti-GM environmentalists, peasant organizations and consumers have achieved a victory in Mexico. In order to protect health and the environment, the government has decreed a phase-out of the herbicide glyphosate, as well as genetically modified corn for human consumption – to be completed by 2024.
Greenpeace Mexico described the announcements as: ‘important steps to move towards an ecological production that preserves biodiversity forged in the hands of farmers for millennia.’
