The newly elected leader of Italy’s main opposition Italian Democratic Party (PD) has quickly become a lightning rod of hope and hate from across the country’s political spectrum.
The PD originally grew out of the post-communist Left in Italy and has been dominated by middle-aged men typified by former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, who moved the party sharply to the right in a neo-liberal direction.
