As Brazil’s ‘Banditry Bill’ threatens to pardon Bolsonaro’s coup crimes, tens of thousands take to the streets to defend the fragile gains of their democracy. By Paula Lacey.
When former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was found guilty of charges related to an attempted military coup after losing the 2022 election to leftist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, many across the country breathed a sigh of relief.
However, just 10 days later, a bill that could have allowed Bolsonaro to evade his prison sentence of 27 years and three months abruptly halted celebrations.
