Donald Trump won the election in the United States – at least in part – by capitalizing on dissatisfaction with the rising cost of living. The inflationary surge triggered by the pandemic now appears to be subsiding, but prices have stabilized at a high level, particularly for rents and mortgages.

Trump’s campaign gained a lot of ground by telling a story of Democrats harming the economy and people’s pockets, talking up the possibility of a crash if he didn’t win. It was bolstered by large amounts of misinformation spread online, including through his new best buddy, billionaire Elon Musk, owner of X.
