A political shift is taking place within the US Democratic Party as its voters nail their colours to the mast of democratic socialism. In Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan and New York City leftwing candidates have swept to victory in the primaries, in many cases toppling established Democratic representatives. In Colorado Melat Kiros defeated Diana DeGette, who has been in Congress for more than 30 years, to become the Democratic nominee for the state’s first Congressional District.
This political upset shows the growing appetite for leftwing political candidates, but with one important detail: voters are increasingly backing representatives who have called out Israel’s genocide in Gaza, forcing many Democrats to reckon with their own more reticent response.
