Even for a first-time visitor, the signs of the rapid dismantling of the French colonial legacy across Senegal are too obvious to miss. In the capital city of Dakar, major streets and monuments have been renamed, including Boulevard General-de-Gaulle, now called Mamadou Dia Boulevard after the first prime minister of the country.
In public schools Senegalese children are now learning about the heroism of Lat Dior Ngoné Latyr Diop, the legendary warrior-king of Cayor who resisted French imperialism in the 19th century, instead of French general Napoleon Bonarparte.
