The gang-rape and murder of a 23-year-old student in Delhi hit the headlines all over the world. But it may be that the tragic death in December of ‘Nirbhaya’, as we have come to call her – meaning ‘one without fear’– was not in vain. Tens of thousands of women and men, old and young, encompassing all castes and creeds, have poured onto streets all over India to pay homage to her and protest violence against women. The government has been forced to take note.

Newspapers run daily articles and letters expressing outrage and anger. Among them you can find the predictable, angry celebrities and individuals who demand castration and death sentences for rapists.
