Brazil’s near-future authoritarian state is identical to the present day, except that it expels over 75s – considered unproductive and burdensome – to isolated colonies. The age threshold has recently been reduced from 80, which not everyone is aware of. That includes Teresa, who’s dismissed from an alligator meat factory and carted off.
Teresa escapes, and the film tracks her transformative journey from her Amazonian hometown where she’s brought up two children alone. The Blue Trail is playful with genre. It’s a ‘road’ movie by boat along the industrial-magical Amazon, a dystopian self-discovery parable, and an anti-ageist coming-of-age movie.
