November 2010 was a big month for me. It began with my first near-death experience. I used to feel so far from death that I would mock it continually. But that was before I was in a car crash so extreme and so packed with catastrophic events that people think I’ve finished the story when I’m barely halfway through telling it. Rescue workers delighted in saying we all should have died, and for several hours afterwards I thought I had (because I’ve seen a lot of sci-fi, and the epic wreckage was classic ‘dead but don’t realize yet’).
At one point during the accident I was certain that I was about to cop it. But what shocked me was... nothing happened. There was no secret divine message, my life didn’t flash before my eyes. I just remember thinking: ‘better sit still... you’re definitely going to die now’.
