Ahlo is a resourceful, indefatigable 10-year-old. But, as he’s a surviving twin whose sibling was stillborn, his traditionalist grandmother is convinced that he’s the reason for the family’s woes.
First, a new dam scheme forces them out of their Laotian village. Then, as they painstakingly cart their possessions uphill en route to their new home, his mother dies. To pile on the pain, their new home turns out to be anything but that. There’s no home, no land, no animals – just an overcrowded and dangerous relocation camp.
