In a landmark case, police rapists have been jailed in Tunisia. ‘Meriem’ was raped by two policemen in September 2012. She was then charged with atteinte à la pudeur (offence against decency) to silence her, causing an international scandal. But Meriem rejected silence, becoming the first woman in Tunisia ever to make a complaint against the police for sexual assault.
She endured 14 hearings until the appeal verdict on 20 November 2014, which gave 15-year sentences. Astonishingly, Meriem remains under investigation by the police as her attackers have made new complaints against her.
