After 50 years of war and two years of intense negotiations in Havana, Cuba, the Colombian government and FARC rebels have reached a deal to remove all landmines from the battlefield. Colombia has seen almost 11,000 killed or injured in landmine-related accidents since 1990, with 57 children killed in 2013 alone.
Fracking has been shown the door again in Tasmania, where the government has extended its fracking ban for the next five years. The measure comes as a means to safeguard the Australian island state’s agriculture industry, and will be subject to a moratorium in 2020. While there is considerable local pressure to keep the ban in place, Tasmania continues to allow oil and shale gas exploration.
