How the Mundukuru people won their battle to cancel plans for a massive new dam in the Amazon.
A massive new hydroelectric dam in the Brazilian Amazon has been cancelled, to the joy of Indigenous communities and environmental groups.
In August, Brazil’s Federal Environmental Agency rejected the São Luiz do Tapajós mega-dam – the Amazon’s largest – on multiple grounds. It would have flooded Indigenous lands, forcing the removal of many Munduruku people from their traditional territory, severely damaging Amazon ecosystems and wildlife, and unleashing greenhouse-gas emissions.
