Toui Bounmy Sidavong holds a bomb dropped by US planes on her village, Ban Napia in Xieng Khouang province, during the Vietnam War. It’s one of 270 million dropped on the South Asian country, a third of which did not explode on impact. Since the war ended in 1975, the bombs have killed or maimed over 20,000 people, many of them children. Towards the end of his presidential term, Barack Obama pledged $90 million to clear the country, but NGOs such as Legacies of War warn that it will take decades and cost many more millions to make Laos safe.
