In a landmark achievement for the Greek LGBTI+ community, Greece has passed a law that allows same-sex couples to become foster parents. Despite strong criticism from the church, a clear majority of parliament voted to approve the bill, which also aims to reduce bureaucracy around adoption. The government believes the law will be a lifeline for children in institutions as well as couples willing to adopt. As Greek author and radio producer Auguste Corteau put it: ‘Politicians who oppose child fostering by homosexual couples have won a place in the darkened dusty depths of history limbo.’
People in rural Uganda are now able to set up their own low-cost community radio stations. RootIO, an open-source toolkit put together by a development worker and a Uganda Telecom developer, enables anyone with a smartphone, a transmitter – and something to say – to create their own micro-stations and reach up to 10,000 listeners. So far, four stations have opened in Uganda, and there are plans to run another 20 in the near future.
