Biodiversity loss means that pollinators – such as bees, bats and butterflies – are having a hard time. But a suburb of the Costa Rican capital, San José, is pulling out all the stops to welcome them.
Nicknamed Ciudad Dulce (Sweet City), Curridabat municipality recognizes pollinators, trees and native plants as citizens. It’s undergoing a transformation in which every street will be turned into a ‘biocorridor’, connecting a network of green spaces. More trees have been planted to remove air pollution and provide shade and there has been widespread planting of native species.
