German-Iranian activist Nahid Taghavi was reunited with her family in January after four years in arbitrary detention in Iran’s notorious Evin prison. Posting a photo embracing her mother on German soil, Taghavi’s daughter said: ‘Words cannot describe our joy.’
After being arrested in October 2020, the 70-year-old was sentenced to 10 years on charges of ‘belonging to an illegal group’ in what Amnesty International described as a ‘grossly unfair’ trial. Amid sanctions and diplomatic isolation, Iran regularly imprisons dual and foreign nationals to use as leverage in negotiations, and the fight to free these political prisoners continues.
