In the wake of tragic drownings in the English Channel last November, the images and life stories of some of the 27 men, women and children, mostly Iraqi Kurds, who died trying to reach Britain, emerged in the press.
In step, politicians like UK Home Secretary Priti Patel used the tragedy to promote a tighter crackdown on border management, blaming the deaths on immoral smugglers and, inevitably, the French police. Over in Belarus, the EU is responding in a similar way to migrants trapped there (see page 12).
