The pristine golden sands of Black Johnson beach, dramatically backed by dense tropical rainforest on one side and the vast blue expanse of the Atlantic Ocean on the other, are one of the most spellbinding sights in Sierra Leone.
But this slice of paradise is at the heart of a $55-million deal between Sierra Leone and China mired in controversy and accusations of malpractice. According to a government press release last year, Black Johnson is set to house a 252-acre industrial fishing harbour for ‘tuna vessels and other bigger fishing vessels’, serving both domestic and international markets.
