In another milestone for what campaign group Culture Unstained has called the ‘unstoppable rejection’ of fossil fuel funding, BP and London’s National Portrait Gallery have announced the end of their 30-year partnership in 2022. It comes after years of activism against the oil and gas giant’s sponsorship of the BP Portrait Award.
A number of cultural institutions in the UK have cut ties with the likes of Shell and BP, including the National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company and National Galleries Scotland. Next in activists’ sights? The British Museum’s sponsorship deal with BP.
