Tens of thousands of Maasai in northern Tanzania fear they could be forced off their ancestral lands in Loliondo and Ngorongoro conservation areas, to make way for elite tourism and trophy hunting.
In Ngorongoro, four fifths of land currently accessible for livestock grazing will be designated purely for conservation. The government claims ‘relocations’ will be voluntary, but campaigners say the national park authorities are already intimidating residents, and intend to demolish schools, places of worship and other amenities.
