The Panje Project is teaching schoolgirls how to swim and perform life-saving rescue techniques in Zanzibar – an offshore region of Tanzania where social conservatism and a lack of culturally appropriate swimwear mean most women never learn how to swim. This photograph, taken from Anna Boyiazis’ series Finding Freedom in the Water, is on display at the World Press Photo exhibition at Smith and Caughey’s, 253-261 Queen Street, Auckland, New Zealand/Aotearoa until 29 July 2018.
