The eternal sea rolling behind, a devotee raises his offering of a coconut and joss sticks to Surya, the sun god, on the occasion of Chhath Puja at Chennai’s Marina Beach, India. Photographer Dipayan Bose was struck by the vibrancy of a colourful North Indian festival taking place in the South of the country. He says: ‘The never-ending fast waves and quiet and calm devotion of the people were so opposite in nature but made the scene so divine.’ A self-taught documentary photographer based in Kolkata, Bose’s goal is to try and document the numerous stories behind a human life. Currently working for an Indian NGO, he freelances as a photojournalist and has previously been a photography lecturer.
