In these short dispatches from across the globe, we hear the stories of Indian farmers and industrial workers who mobilized en masse to resist a series of harsh laws, women in Iceland who declared a ‘day off’ to draw attention to their work, and Nigerian trade unions that stood up to the government over the minimum wage. At a moment of global economic crisis, these stories highlight the strength of collective action. While these mass strikes did not always win their immediate goals, each is an example of working-class power and self-organization in the face of unjust laws, repressive governments and poor working conditions.
In each case, they show the enormous power of workers when they come together.
