There is a settlement just outside Herat, Afghanistan, which has come to be known as ‘One Kidney Village’. This is where the debt-ridden and desperate come to heal from kidney donation surgery – or wait for one of the region’s countless organ brokers to make an offer.
Recipients come from all over the world, paying as little as $1,500 for a kidney, plus hospital fees.
