Africa’s most populous country seems to have succeeded in a peaceful transfer of presidential power from an incumbent to an aspirant. But there is no big political rupture here. The victor, 71-year-old Bola Tinubu, is a consummate insider in Nigerian politics and is known as ‘the kingmaker’ for his role in forming the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party and shaping the campaigns of former president and APC leader Muhammadu Buhari.
In the horse-trading rough-and-tumble of Nigerian politics, Tinubu’s campaign was short on policy and substance but organized instead around the rather self-serving slogan of ‘it’s my turn’.
