Letay Tesfaye fears her baby has just days to live. ‘We eat dry bread (injera) or whatever is offered to us from the village,’ she says. ‘My newborn is always crying of hunger. He is extremely malnourished and weak. I am almost certain I will lose him any moment.’
Letay lives in Samre, a small town in the war-ravaged northern Ethiopian region of Tigray. After emerging from a vicious two-year civil conflict, the region is now facing the threat of starvation, with relief officials recording almost 600 hunger-related deaths between April and June this year.
