Rainy season in Addis might be one of the worst times to host an event – especially on a wet Sunday. Yet despite the odds, a few of us gathered in a hall in one of the city’s cultural centres to watch Cuba, An African Odyssey.
The documentary, which spans a period from the 1960s through to the 1990s is about Cuba’s support for Africa’s liberation struggles. We saw Che Guevara lead fighters alongside liberation armies in the Congo, and heard the film’s director Jihan El-Tahri speak afterwards. But as powerful as the film was, it was only part of the reason most of us had braved the rain and cold that gloomy Sunday afternoon.
