Filters that scan your messages against government-approved ban lists; a legal requirement for users to upload passport photos before accessing websites; suppression of ‘illegal content’ online including videos of protests and photos of asylum seekers crossing the English Channel.
Perhaps the stuff of Orwell’s nightmares, these are also the intentions of the UK’s ‘Online Safety’ Bill, which has just been passed by parliament.
